It’s a beautiful Monday morning in my hometown of Cleveland, OH. As I sit here at Ma dukes computer I feel that it’s only right that this weeks “Shot of Soul” should focus on an up and coming artist out of the OH-Ten (ohio) who is one of my partners in crime. Afaliah is originally from Columbus but resides in Brooklyn, NYC now. If you’re in the city check her show out!! It’s DOPE!! She dropped a video last week for her single “Ms. U” which is also available on iTunes. Really dope joint!
Every time I go to Detroit I try to link up with my good Friend DJ Dez! I met DEZ in 2006 on a European tour with Slum Village (he was the DJ) and we’ve been cool ever since. In 2008 he created this mix titled “Morning Pics” that has some of the most incredible music on it. Music by artist I had never heard. Unfortunately I didn’t have the names of the artist to put with the name of the records. I know some of them but I don’t know the artist I’ve selected for todays entry. These lyrics are definitely ones that I live by.
So with that being said today’s Lyric’s & Life comes from somebody and there church choir and they killing! This is the sweetest church groove I’ve ever heard!!!!! If you was at this church the day they recorded this . . . . . . your head had to be nodding!
Enjoy!
“I was young, but now I’m old
Once a child, but now I’m grown
And I, never seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor His seed beg bread.”
NEVER SEEN THE RIGHTEOUS FORSAKEN
Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there!!! Have a great weekend.
This is one of my favorite grooves with one of my favorite singers on lead vocals (Phil Perry) when he was with “The Montclairs” out of East St. Louis. Enjoy!
The Montclairs - Baby (You Know I’m Gonna Miss You) Pt. 2
This is hands down the best version of “It’s A Man’s World” titled “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” brought to you by The Godfather of Soul “James Brown.” The Horns at the beginning are incredible!!!!!!!!!! The rhythm section is in the pocket as usual and it just gets no better than this feeling. I have no words for James’ singing over this amazing arrangement. I’ve said enough!
Our generations music has been fueled by classic music from the past. The majority of people are unaware of the samples and music replayed by artist today. Today’s “shot of soul” is for the original artist who may be credited in the liner notes but uncredited in the eyes of the public. The material created by using the originals are dope but would not exist without the incredible music that was created decades ago!
ENJOY!
Curtis Mayfield - Think
*Used by Beyonce’ for “Resentment”
Kool & The Gang - Sea of Tranquility
*Used by D’angelo for “Send it On”
Johnny Hammond - Can’t We Smile (The Mizell Brothers on Vocals)
This is one of the best songs of all time. I apply daily. Enjoy!
“Stand
In the end you’ll still be you
One that’s done all the things you set out to do
Stand
There’s a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you’re going anywhere
Stand
For the things you know are right
It s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal”
Last weekend I was in Austin, TX performing with Black Milk at South by Southwest. There were so many dope acts!! The highlight of my weekend was seeing Devin the Dude perform. Unfortunately, I didn’t record it. I failed!! Here is some footage from the weekend.
