Develop Your Identity

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Welcome back to Student of Your Dream 101!

Today we will began to discuss the process of creating your product. The first step to creating your product is knowing who you are. In the music realm if you state I’m a musician, the question that is guaranteed to follow is “what genre of music do you do?” That question will more than likely be followed with, “What type of sound do you have?” You should have an answer for all of these questions.

It took me sometime to find my sound and the truth is most artist experiment until they find there sound or niche. I believe it is important to study who you aspire to be like but make sure you have your own identity. Through all of your influences you should be able to develop your identity but it’s not an overnight process.

The questions above apply to non-musicians as well. What type of business do you do? What is your service? it’s imperative that you develop your brand. This may take some time but it is important that you start.

TIP 5 - Develop Your Identity

Think about the people you are influenced by. They all have a brand. You have to find yours.

Finding A Mentor

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Welcome to Week 4 of Student of my dream 101.

By this time you should have a rough draft of the steps you are gonna take to reach your overall goal. I must admit that devising a plan is one of the most difficult task within the course of becoming a student of your dream. The plan could change in the long run as you learn more. I was gonna discuss creating product this week but I want to talk about something that can almost guarantee reaching your overall goal.

Tip 4 - FIND A MENTOR

I find that this can be the most challenging step in reaching your overall goal. Your mentor should be someone who is very familiar with the field you are entering and has knowledge as well as success within the field. It is important that you do the knowledge and study your overall goal as well but there is nothing better than someone who knows the correct steps vs. the myths and can lead you in the right direction.

F.Y.I. You really have to ask yourself how bad do you want your overall goal. If you don’t know someone off hand that is willing to be your mentor and answer questions you have, my advice would be to work a free internship within your field. Internships lead to connects that you may need down the line. It’s a must that you know the ends and outs of your profession. Especially the business side.

Devise A Plan

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Welcome back to Student of My Dream 101!

By this time you have discovered your overall goal and you are aware of the steps it takes to get to your overall goal. This weeks step is devising a plan to accomplish the work that must be completed to reach your overall goal. There are a lot of steps involved. Since I am a musician I will speak from my stand point.

Overall Goal - Major Deal where I am a priority. For example, Alicia Keys has been a major priority at J records since the beginning of her career.

If I am a musician the first thing any label representative or music exec is gonna say is “let me hear some music.” So my first step is to create product. My overall goal is to be signed to a Major Label where I am a priority (meaning my album will be scheduled for a release with heavy marketing around it) so I have to make music that is radio ready and undeniable. It’s important that the product you create lines up with your overall goal. The creation of product can take some time and I will go further into that next week.

Tip 3 - Devise a plan or outline to accomplish the work it takes to reach your overall goal.

Awareness

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Welcome back to Student of My Dream 101!

Last week we touched on discovering your overall goal as far as your dream is concerned. It’s a new decade and now is the perfect time to start putting the blueprint together. Remember you can’t draft a blueprint if you don’t know what you’re building and you can’t get directions if you don’t know where you’re heading. So before you move to tip 2 “discover your overall goal!”

After your discovery it is imperative that you make yourself aware of the steps it takes to get to your overall goal. Your dream is a job. It’s like high school and college. Your first week of school you meet with your guidance counselor and he/she shows you the courses you will have to pass over the next four years in order to get to your overall goal of graduation. The only difference between school and your dream is you’re the guidance counselor.

Tip 2 - Make yourself aware of the steps it takes to reach your overall goal. The rules change every year so it is very important that you do the knowledge on the profession you want to be in.

Student of My Dream 101 - Overall Goal

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Student of My Dream has been out for 2 weeks today and I’m glad to say that it is doing extremely well. I’ve been getting great feedback from all of you. I’m truly grateful and would like to thank everyone who has listened to the new project! If you don’t have it download it here - http://usershare.net/eqg6ai8lqo41

Every Tuesday I will be writing an entry titled “Student of My Dream 101″ in which I will give advice and tips on some of the methods I have used over the years. This weeks entry is about the “Overall Goal.”

Everyone has been in a situation when you are meeting someone and they ask you “what do you do for a living?” Your response is always your occupation and who you work for. If the person you’re conversing with is not familiar with your occupation you can easily give them a description of what you do at work. Unfortunately when It comes to peoples dreams there is an uncertainty and vagueness and because of this people get lost in the dream and outsiders may consider your dream to be more of a hobby. I’ve heard it all from I want to be a singer, dancer, film maker, producer, musician, artist . . . . you get my point. What does that mean??

The first step to being a student of your dream is knowing what you’re studying! In order to know what you’re studying you have to set your own overall goal. What do you want to be and in what capacity? If you want to be a musician/artist, do you want to be a local artist, an independent artist, or major label artist. These are important questions that you must answer because you have to prepare for each goal differently. What is your vision?

Tip 1 - Discover your overall goal! If you want to be the next Jay-Z or the next Ben Carson you’ve taken the first step cause you know where your final destination!
