Lyrics & Life -

Unknown Artist

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Every time I go to Detroit I try to link up with my good Friend DJ Dez! I met DEZ in 2006 on a European tour with Slum Village (he was the DJ) and we’ve been cool ever since. In 2008 he created this mix titled “Morning Pics” that has some of the most incredible music on it. Music by artist I had never heard. Unfortunately I didn’t have the names of the artist to put with the name of the records. I know some of them but I don’t know the artist I’ve selected for todays entry. These lyrics are definitely ones that I live by.

So with that being said today’s Lyric’s & Life comes from somebody and there church choir and they killing! This is the sweetest church groove I’ve ever heard!!!!! If you was at this church the day they recorded this . . . . . . your head had to be nodding!

Enjoy!

“I was young, but now I’m old

Once a child, but now I’m grown

And I, never seen the righteous forsaken,

Nor His seed beg bread.”

NEVER SEEN THE RIGHTEOUS FORSAKEN

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there!!! Have a great weekend.

Peace,

Lyrics & Life - STAND

Friday, March 26th, 2010

This is one of the best songs of all time. I apply daily. Enjoy!

“Stand
In the end you’ll still be you
One that’s done all the things you set out to do
Stand
There’s a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you’re going anywhere
Stand
For the things you know are right
It s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal”

Lyrics & Life - Mighty Love

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I just got back from in town from NYC this morning after playing a great show with my crew at Tillman’s last night. Shout out to my team Malikapedia, Young Shelley B 5K, Ego Zo, and Purcelville Soul Beard for traveling and performing with me last night and taking the Mega Bus back in the early AM. On the ride back I was listening to The Spinners Live album. I love The Spinners because there lyrics are always on point!

Once there was a boy and girl
Boys said, “I love you so”
Girl said, “I’ll never leave you”
They grew older and left each other
‘Cause that’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goesThen there’s a time
Seems like you’ll never find
Someone willing to love you
Keep on lookin’, you’ll soon discover

A mighty love
Will sometimes makes you weep and moan
A mighty love
You sit all day by the telephone
Cause you’re all alone
You need a mighty love

I haven’t slept all night! I’m out ya’ll

Peace,

Lyrics & Life

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

In these days in time as I seek my dream, some days I have my doubts and it is only human. I’m sure some of you can relate. No matter the doubt the answer is faith and trying. With that being said this weeks lyrics & Life come from my favorite group of all time . . . . . “Sly and The Family Stone” record “You Can Make It If You Try”

“Push a little harder

Think a little deeper

Don’t let plastic

bring you down

Time still creepin’

‘Specially when you sleepin’

Wake up and go

For what you know”

-Sly & The Family Stone-

Enjoy this live performance from Woodstock of “You Can Make It If You Try”

Tonight I’ll be performing in DC with Black Milk! IT’S FREEEEEEEEEEE!! Be there if you’re in the area. The flyer is below.

Lyrics & Life-Gnarls Barkley “Going On”
D’angelo-Ghetto Music Leak

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I know this is the second week of Gnarls Barkley on Lyrics & Life but I couldn’t pass up this song. I live by these lyrics.

“The touch and feeling of free

Is intangible technically

Something you got to believe in

Connect the cause and effect

One foot in front of the next

This is the start of a journey

And my mind is already gone

and though there other unknowns

Somehow this doesn’t concern me

and you can stand right there if you want

But I’m going on

And I’m prepared to go it alone

I’m going on

To a place in the sun that’s nice and warm

I’m going on

And I’m sure they’ll have a place for you too

Anyone that needs what they want

and doesn’t want what they need

I want nothing to do with”

Enjoy!

Lyrics & Life - Surprise

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Todays “Lyrics & Life” apply to my life right now!! Without a doubt Cee-Lo’s lyrics have always hit home from his early days with Goodie Mob to his solo career to his recent tenure with Gnarls Barkley. This weeks Lyrics & Life is brought to you by Gnarls Barkley and their record titled “Surprise” from their “Odd Couple” release.

Lyrics and music below!

“There are hills and mountains between us

Always something to get over

Needless to say it’s a wonderful day

I just noticed how nice it was to know ya

Oh, but be ready to sacrifice

If you love him you should tell him twice

Because when everything that’s alive

Ultimately dies, Oh Lord

Don’t be surprised, don’t be surprised”

Lyrics & Life - God is Love

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

This weeks Lyrics & Life entry comes from Marvin Gaye’s classic “What’s Going On” album. This album will be 40 years old next May and it still applies four decades later.

“Don’t Go Talking bout my Father / Cause God is my friend, Jesus is My friend/ He loves us whether or not we know it / And He’ll forgive all our sins/ And all He ask of us Is we give each other love”

Lyrics & Life - The Truth

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

In October of 1999 I purchased Pharoah Monch’s first solo album “Internal Affairs.” This
album stayed in heavy rotation. The record titled “The Truth” Feat. Common and Talib Kweli was
one of my favorites due to the lyrics! This week I took a quotable from each emcee’s verse. The record is below the lyrics for your listening pleasure!

“The truth is that you ugly, not on the outside
But in the inside on the outside you frontin you lovely
The discovery of these things and all are well-hidden
But when you in denial of self it is forbidden, that’s the truth”

-Pharoah Monch -

“Time is real, we can’t rewind it
Out of everybody I met, who told the truth? Time did”

-Common-

“The truth is there, it’s just the heart you gotta find it in”

-Talib Kweli-

This week’s quotable doesn’t come from the lyrics of a song, but from a powerful statement that everyone should follow. When asked what took so long for songstress Sade to release another album, her rebuttal was:

“I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I’m not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand.”

-Sade-

This quote should be applied to our everyday lives. Everything we do and say matters. We represent ourselves so we should think before we speak and plan before we act! As far as music is concerned, artists who make great music know they make great music and I appreciate that they take their time to put out quality records! Quality over quantity, no matter how long it takes, preparation is always key! We waited for Maxwell and he didn’t disappoint, now prepare for Sade as she returns just to blow us away!

I’ll leave you with this

Lyrics & Life

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

What you want might make you cry and what you need might pass you by If you don’t catch it. And what you need ironically, will turn out what you want to be If you just let it. (c) Lauryn Hill

This quotable is from Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” album and I feel it is most fitting as we approach the new decade. There are numerous things that we think we want but honestly don’t need. Unfortunately, sometimes we can’t see that we don’t need what we want and what we need is staring us right in the face but we can’t see it because we are blinded by what we want. I challenge you in 2010 to seek out what you need in life. Whether it be a career, dream, love, or anything else, ask God to show you and give you what you need and cast away what you don’t need. Leave all bad habits, unhealthy relationships, excuses for yourself, and excuses for others in this decade.

An old woman once told me “It takes courage to grow and get older,” I challenge you to grow next decade but it’s gonna take work. DO THE WORK!

I’ll holla at ya’ll in 2010!

Peace and Blessings,

AB
